Praying for the Prodigal Encouragement and Practical Advice for Parents of Prodigals edition by Andrea Merrell Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Andrea Merrell writes with a transparency that will encourage parents of prodigals. Whether dealing with an openly rebellious child or one simply struggling with peer pressures, parents will relate to her story. And when at the end of their own resources, they will find comfort in her thirty days of Scripture-based prayers--prayers that claim God's promises for their children. PRAYING FOR THE PRODIGAL is a life line for hurting parents.
What a wonderful, inspirational and helpful book Mrs. Merrell has written. Reading about not one, but two prodigal children formerly involved in drugs and alcohol and hanging with the wrong crowds, my heart broke for Andrea and her husband each time I read of an accident or other painful situation their children were involved in. Her honesty is so refreshing, as she freely admits the revelations of imperfect parenting skills we as parents are all guilty of.
What filled me with hope is that she and her husband never gave up hope. On God, on themselves as parents, and especially their children. They continued to pray without fail, and I was encouraged to learn that through her prayers, God changed Mrs. Merrell first, before He began dealing with their children, one by one. How hard it must have been for them to keep on praying for years, with no evidence of a change in sight. Yet as someone who's seen God work in similar ways in my own life, this author reflects back and realizes how God used these years to strengthen her faith and trust in Him. Anyone serving in a God-given ministry has suffered and paid a heavy price to do so, and Mrs. Merrell is no exception.
I've read other books on prodigals, but this one exceeds them all. In addition to her transparency and humility in sharing such personal details of the lives of she and her family, Mrs. Merrell provides wisdom gleaned from hindsight that will help anyone dealing with a prodigal today. Better yet, she offers sound advice for parents of young children on the importance of knowing their teachers and friends, and especially in this day and age, the importance of talking to their children about the landmines ahead of them as they grow older. Landmines such as peer pressure, bullying, drugs and alcohol, sex outside of marriage, pornography, etc.
The book alone is worth reading for the advice she offers based on hard experiences, but in addition she provides parents with a 30-day prayer guide to help get them praying God's Word over their children's lives, blank pages for readers to write out their own prayers to God. And how wonderful it was to learn her prodigals are back home, so to speak. Both son and daughter are happily married and serving God, parents themselves and raising their children in church, just as Andrea and Charlie Merrell did. The Bible tells us if we "train up a child in the way he [she] should go, they will not depart from it [forever]."
One final blessing from reading this book is hearing from the former prodigal son and daughter themselves, freely offering advice to parents of children of any age, on what they can do and say that may keep their children from turning their backs on God and family and head for a life of pain and heartache.
Well-done, well-done, well-done, Andrea.

I bought this book and 'Prayers for Prodigals - 90 days of prayer for your child' by James Banks. I like the other book so much better and am returning this one. This book has more of the story of their lives and 30 days of short prayers, but James Banks book has 90 days of much longer and better developed biblically based prayers which is more of what I was looking for.
I just started to read this today and I didn't want to put it down! It is SO uplifting and encouraging to know that I am not alone! I LOVE what she has to say and that she shared everything she went through. My story hasn't gone as far as Andrea's has, but it is still heartbreaking to have a child you have raised in Church turn their back and you feel totally helpless! A good friend of mine (that is somehow related to Andrea) from Church recommended this book and I am SO glad she did! Even though our stories aren't exactly alike, the feelings that I have had through all of this are almost exactly the same.....it is just REALLY GREAT to know that there are people out there that can relate and maybe even encourage us! This book is a WONDERFUL tool in the "battle" we face as parents of a "prodigal"....
IT'S HIGH TIME PARENTS OF PRODIGALS IN THIS WORLD PUT THEIR FOOT DOWN AND LET THE devil KNOW THAT he ISN'T GOING TO WIN!!!!!!!
Thank you for this book Andrea Merrell!!!!
A prodigal is someone who is wasteful, someone who squanders. Or he/she returns after an absence.
Merrell’s book shares with transparency about her son and daughter as teenagers wandering down the wrong path of life. They turned away from parental values and biblical teaching.
Are you “searching for ways to equip your smaller children” to face future temptations, or hurting because someone you love has stepped away from God’s love and grace, going their own way? This book will offer clarity for what you’re experiencing. It will also guide you toward a plan to recover your lost one—son, daughter, grandchild, or friend.
Merrell cried out to the Lord for help to understand, to know the next step and what to say. Through the pressures of their kids withdrawing from family, abusing home privileges, losing jobs, drinking alcohol, car accidents, taking drugs, and a near-death experience, it broke Mom and Dad’s hearts. Merrell and her husband Charlie looked to God’s word and prayer.
Merrell says those close to the prodigal need not assign blame for a prodigal’s behavior. She also records the parent’s checklist for survival through the hard times.
She offers wisdom and concrete guidance through keys toward peace and restoration for your family.
If you don’t feel able to pray adequately, Merrell includes scriptures and powerful prayers for thirty days. Take the challenge to allow God to work in your family.
